Melrose District To Get Neighborhood Market

Tesco, the parent company of the "Fresh and Easy" grocery chain will soon announce plans to open a "mini location" in the heart of the Melrose District.

Plans call for a "Fresh and Easy Express" to open at the southwest corner of Melrose Avenue and Gardner St, in a building that houses retail on the street level and it's own parking garage on the second floor.

Current tenant "The Coffee Bean" will be vacating it's location sometime in February sources tell us. It's not known if they will re-locate to another spot on Melrose in the same area.

Tesco recently opened it's first "Fresh and Easy Express" location to rave reviews on La Cienega Blvd and 18th street.

Neighbors in the area welcome the news citing these types of businesses that cater to the local residential area should help bolster plans for a Melrose Business Improvement District ("BID") currently in the works by area landlords.

No time frame has been given as to when this location may open as renovations are expected to take months.

Here's a picture from the La Cienega location that opened this past November..

Rash of Street Robberies Hit Area - The Latest

From L.A.P.D. Detectives:

Three robberies along the Melrose corridor occurred during the late evening hours, between 9/12 & 9/14. On 9/11, two robberies were just west of Wilshire Area's border, but in the city of West Hollywood. This totaled 5 robberies over the course of 4 days. The suspects in each occurrence were described as 2 male African Americans, 20-25 yrs old and armed with a handgun. On 9/16/11, West Hollywood Deputies handled a robbery from Santa Monica @ Curson, which later led to an arrest.

Both Wilshire & West Hollywood detectives had been communicating about the similarities and shared info on the West Hollywood arrest. Wilshire robbery detectives believe that the suspects are responsible for all three robberies and will file charges once the 3 investigations are completed.

Most recently, on Sunday, 9/18, a street robbery, with similar suspect descriptions occurred in the 600 block of N. Hayworth. This pair of suspects are not connected to the first pair arrested by West Hollywood Sheriffs. The original pair were still in custody, concluding that the Sunday robbery was committed by another pair of robbers. That investigation is still open and Wilshire robbery detectives are searching for 2 male African Americans, 23-25 year old, 5-6 & 6-2 in height. Both with fair to light complexions. They were armed with a handgun and robbed victim of a cell phone, documents and a purse.

UPDATE:

From LAPD Detectives --"The robberies were linked to the arrest by West Hollywood Sheriffs.  The cases were filed at the Beverly Hills DA's Office and the series has dried up since the arrests."
