Another Neighborhood Merchant Closed it's Doors Today
Longtime Melrose Village area restaurant Louise's Trattoria (located at Gardner Street and Melrose Avenue) closed it's doors today (11/10) due to the poor economic climate facing many neighborhood merchants that also struggle to stay in business. The Louises Restaurant chain will continue to operate it's seven other locations.
The closing of the "Hollywood" Louise's, a popular mainstay in the Melrose "scene" for nearly 20 years, signals just how challenging the current economic environment still is, which is even a struggle for established locally branded businesses such as this.
A neighbor who lives near the closed restaurant expressed shock and dismay at the closing and wonders if the street itself will ever turn around in the midst of such tough competition from nearby hot spots like The Grove and the getting very hipper Fairfax Avenue.
No word on what will take it's place but sources speculate that it's already leased since it has a valuable beer and wine license and is a prime spot in the area. One of Louise's employees commented the store was closed for "renovation" yet the location itself was removed from the company's official website.

This is a sad event...
Both the service and food were excellent. I ate there many, many times over the years. Food was always fresh, always consistently good. Everyone that worked there, from waiters to busboys, were some of the friendliest I have ever come across. If you are seriously making a comparison between Louise's and Olive Garden or Johnny Rockets...well...you lost any credibility that you may have had. Or more simply put- you're an idiot. Why not just go to McD's drive thru? Perhaps that's more appropriate for your budget and level of culinary sophistication. Parking is indeed an issue here as it is on all of Melrose. So pay the man the few bucks to park your car. I bet they're glad not to have to deal with folks like you any longer. This is a sad event...
Parking Lot for Rent
If anyone knows of a business that needs parking on Friday nights, Saturday and Sunday all day & all night. We are on Fairfax/Clinton.

Louise's Closing
I want to disagree with all those who dance on Louise's on Melrose's grave. I loved the place and frequented it often. Was great having it a block away and a walk only down to the corner. While the prices have indeed climbed over the years (as has everything except rents to keep up expenses of owning a small duplex), Louise's was still was a good local place. Surely cost more than any coffee shop meal, but both the food + the inside was commensurately nicer, too. Short of going to some flashy $$$$ place costing much more, Louise's offered a nice meal on white tablecloth at a price point not offered elsewhere close to us. However, I agree with all, that to have a restaurant able to serve maybe 50-100 people, while having not even one single parking spot onsite is beyond stupid. It's just unconscionable for the City of LA to give a biz permit without REQUIRING them to make some arrangements to leave patron's cars anywhere they want EXCEPT our in front of our homes in the neighborhood, with their valets running past our houses. I hope a a similar place comes in and if not, then absolutely any other biz except one more Marijuana Dispensory. If a once so popular place like Louise's can't even be profitable on Melrose, how big of a mystery is it that local landlords might be more than just a little greedy? As a long time property owner and neighbor, watching the further daily decay of our once wonderful Melrose Ave. is to me personally, just heartbreaking.
the parking situation was deplorable
Seriously, who wants to use valet for a Louises? No street parking and no parking lot = I can't recall the last time I ate there.
It will probably become
It will probably become another marijuana costco. I blame Obama for ruining our neighborhood. What big box/franshise wants to near a bunch of drug dealers.
If I were a franchise, I'd
If I were a franchise, I'd move right in. What better to boost business than a bunch of customers with the munchies? Although I do not think Obama was responsible for the loophole in California's marijuana dispensary laws...
I think they wish it was the economy...
But the truth of the matter is the food at Louise's was nearly inedible and the service was just okay. It's not the economy that forced them to close, nor the competition from the Grove. It's the better options all around Melrose that are similarly priced, like Village Idiot, Blu Jam, Vienna Cafe, 8oz, Johnny Rockets, that forced this worse-than-olive-garden restaurant to shutter. I very much look forward to whatever takes its place because it will have to be better than Louise's. I am very excited about the new eateries opening up on Melrose, like Vinoteque and others. Keep your chin up Melrose Action. It's not as bad as it seems.
I will say the economy definitely has effected other businesses on Melrose. But then again, how many Ed Hardy knockoffs or head shops can one street take?
