Murder of Katan Khaimov Still Unsolved

It was over one year ago when neighbor Katan Khaimov went for a evening walk in the area around Poinsettia Park.

At approxiamately 9 pm on Sunday, March 9th, 2008 neighbors reported hearing what they thought was a transient or mentally ill person screaming on the sidewalk at Romaine St and Martel Av.

After the screams went on a neighbor finally called 9-1-1 to report a mentally ill person crying for help. LAPD responded to the call based on information from the caller.

Once L.A.P.D. officers arrived on the scene, they quickly realized the man had been severely injured and paramedics were immediately called.

Mr. Khaimov's wife happened to be driving by the scene while out searching the neighborhood after becoming concerned that her husband had not returned home from his walk. She stopped and asked officers if they had seen her husband. Sadly she discovered they were treating her husband. Mr. Khaimov was transported to Cedar's Sinai but was pronounced dead at 12:01 am the next morning.

Melrose Action along with Mr. Khaimov's family held a candlelight memorial at the site of the incident immediately following the Neighborhood Meeting on Crime on Monday, March 9th.

A renewal of the reward in the case was announced at the meeting by Councilmember Jack Weiss and County Supervisor and neighbor Zev Yaroslavsky. A new flyer was distributed at the meeting. The total reward amount stands at $63,000.00.

Khaimov Murder

The police might get DNA evidence by swabing the mouths of transients lining up for dinner on Romaine just east of La Brea.
