There are now 966 Marijuana Dispensaries in Los Angeles

According to officials with the City of Los Angeles, there are now over 966 Medical Marijuana locations within the city limits. Over 780 may be operating illegally under a city moratorium that currently exists. So far the LA City Council has reviewed just 85 "hardship" applications that seek "exemption" from the moratorium. Most of those 85 it has reviewed have in fact been denied or withdrawn(As of 9/15/2009).

It should also be noted that these operations are supposed to be non-profit collectives, but most of them are operating as profit-making businesses, in direct violation of state law. California law says that people can use and possess marijuana for medical reasons - but cannot sell it to make money.

City Moratorium Declared Illegal

Thought I'd post a follow-up. A judge declared the City's previously referenced moratorium illegal. The City relied upon the flawed advice of City Attorney Carmen Trutanich who got thrown out of court on his behind as expected.

If you are angry about the chaos the City has been thrust into, blame Trutanich.

Now this legal eagle is giving new advice that all dispensaries are illegal.

Lawyers are lining up once again.

Whose behind do you think will once again be thrown out of court?

Time for reasonable regulation like the City of West Hollywood has adopted.

There are no safety or crime problems with dispensaries in WeHo (where there is an ordinance). The problems are all in LA (where there is NO ordinance). Coincidence? I think not.

Crime Down

Don't believe the hype.

Pot joke

I live off Melrose and I've watched who comes and goes from the marajuana houses and it's not sick people. It's a scam. Shame on our city officials.

you can't tell by just looking

you can't tell by just looking at someone whether they're 'sick' or not. a person can look completely normal and have cancer, hiv/aids, back pain, or many other ailments. marijuana is a natural solution to their pain.

Weed

Maybe they would be depressed if they couldn't get any weed.

Voting republican from now on

I'm a life long Democrat but I'm voting Republican from now on. Too much pandering and not tough enough on crime and illegal pot-b.s.-pusher-punks.

tired of crime and bad doers

Life is not easy and expensive in Los Angeles. I'm really tired of having to deal with scum-bag criminals, gang members, drugies and rapists. We need to change the law in this country and especially this city. One violent preditorial crime and you're in jail for life, no possibility of parol. Period. And that means a six by six cell -- no tv, no nothing from the tax payer. Either that, or allow the population to take care of the scum-bags ourselves.

Where do you live that you

Where do you live that you are "dealing" with scum-bag criminals, gang members, drugies and rapists? Sure these things exist but in your daily life? Don't think so. You sound crazy. "And that means a six by six cell -- no tv, no nothing from the tax payer." So we the tax payer pays for said prison cell yet...we don't pay for it? I know hard drug addicts that can connect the dots better than you. Maybe time to think about getting some anger management classes?

Sounds like you are the one that needs to be locked up. For ignorance. Eye for an eye does not work. See any history book for confirmation.
Now back on topic. "Drugies" whatever that means doesn't equal violent crime sparky. Speaking of marijuana, (the topic of discussion)crime is down across the state since these dispesaries have opened. So your arguement is not only weak, it's flat out wrong. No go back and hide under your paranoid rock.

MEDICAL MJ

I am a legal purchaser of this medicine. I do not drive while using, do not sell or over use. I have had two major car accidents that were not my fault which causes me pain, I have arthritis, diabetes and have a bone defect around my knees which resulted in 6 operations. I was given Vioxx which gave me rapid heart beat and other problems and this drug was recalled, was given Vicodin which is addictive and makes me constipated so I stopped taking that. I also tried other "medicines" but, Mj has helped me the most and my hypertension-high blood pressure was reduced to being onthe high end of normal and feel much better than I was on the above mentioned so-called "medicines". It also is cheaper. I rarely drink, never took any cocaine, meth, or any other illegal drugs. God made this plant for medical uses. You do not grow Vioxx or Vicodin from the ground. Please be a responsible patient. God bless.

Selling pot is illegal for any reason

I agree with the above comment when it says that LA has done a very poor job putting in place regulations for medical marijuana. However this comment is just plain wrong when it says that all of the marijuana stores are now legal. Most of these stores sell pot, and hide behind the excuse that it's medical marijuana. But SELLING marijuana is illegal for any reason, including medical reasons. Real medical marijuana patients are supposed to either grow their own pot, or get it from non-profit collectives that they have joined and actively participate in. Any store that SELLS pot is by definition an illegal enterprise, and should be shut down immediately. Considering the amount of crime connected to these stores in our neighborhood (3 armed robberies in just the past few months), we need for all of them to be shut down. Those are the regulations we need to demand that City Council adopt.

No, pot is good.

Uh, I grow my own bud. I pick up too, not just from dispensaries, but from the original connect. I've made friends with most of my dealers, and I see no reason to give a dispensary my money when I could give it to a homie, and get hooked up fatter anyway. I have a few personal reasons for my use, and pot does help. Greatly. Saying that the sale of marijuana is illegal no matter if it's for medical use or not, isnt true, because there are non profit dispensaries out there now that are in perfect compliance with the regulations. If you're talking about morally, then fuck you. Theres no other way to say it really, you cant tell someone whats right or wrong for them when you arent in the same situation. It's wrong of you to think you can. I know first hand that pot has saved lives of seriously depressed people. Your complete certainty in your arguement leaves me little doubt that my reply wont shake you at all, save maybe the fuck you. And if that does get through, good, think about my reason for saying it. Im a pothead, and you're trying to mess with my lifestyle. I dont fuck with yours.

The City's moratorium has expired

You've missed the back story.

The City's moratorium officially ended Sept 15. In the absence of city regulation, every medical marijuana dispensary operating in the City of LA is now legal, regardless of prior operation or hardship history.

According to state law, cities may only enact emergency moratoria for no more than 2 years. The rationle of state legislators is that 2 years is plenty of time for a jurisdiction to put regulations into place.

The City of LA has taken a rather lone view that it, alone among cities in the state, is able to extend a moratorium for longer than 2 years. The city, when asked, manipulates the facts and plays fast and loose with dates in an effort to extend the moratoria longer than allowed.

But attorneys are lining up to sue and the city has no legal leg to stand on. If you thought billboard regulation was a joke, city dispensary regulation has become a farce.

This has exposed the city to enormous legal liability and opened the floodgates to flagrantly irresponsible dispensary operators. This has made it doubly difficult for responsible operators who are being tainted by the illegal activities of the bad operators.

We need to demand the City Council enact reasonable regulations ASAP. They have had 2 years and have so far failed. They can enact reasonable land use regulations and respect Prop 215 at the same time. Many other cities like West Hollywood have been able to adopt regulations; why can't LA? We expect LA to be a leader not a laggard.
